In spite of all our technology and sophistication, car crashes remain the leading cause of death and injury to children in the U.S. Founded 30 years ago by Debbi Baer, the Car Seat Lady is now actually three ladies: Debbi, her daughter Alisa, who is also a pediatrician, and Emily, a new mom. "The Carrier without a base on this car seat installs easily & securely, making it great for taxis, rental cars, etc. It’s fits preemies well, and is a lightweight, compact seat. In addition, it’s a great value, as you get a versatile car seat + umbrella stroller travel system for less than $150! One downside is this car seat only snaps into its own stroller, though it can strap onto snap n’ gos or other strollers with universal adapters. Because the shell is short, it will likely be outgrown by 9-12 months, and the built-in locking device for the seat belt on the base can be hard to close. "

"When using this with the base (either with LATCH or a seat belt), it’s a great seat, but we don’t recommend it for parents who are using taxis and rental cars. The narrow footprint makes it a solid choice when you need to fit three across. Be aware: the wipeable fabrics can make baby sweat, and the sunshade is tiny and catches on the handle. "

"This is the seat we use for our own babies. It installs easily and safely in virtually any vehicle, both with and without the base -- making it perfect for both city and suburbs. It’s compactness means it’s great for 3-across and front seat leg room (it gives 4 more inches of legroom than other infant seats) - with the downside being baby outgrows it a few months sooner than some seats. The Aton 2 has a load leg on the base that lowers risk of head injury. "

"Parents love the Graco Snug Ride 35 Classic Connect for its versatility and value. Like many other carseats, it fits on many strollers -- but has one of the better sunshades out there (making it even better for stroller-use). It fits both preemies and young toddlers well. Because it installs securely sans base (Graco allows a European installation method for this seat), it's perfect for an urban parent who relies on taxis to get around. Keep in mind that some fabrics can make babies sweat"

"This is a better bet than the Mico for very small and very big babies, but it lacks the safety features available in similarly priced seats, like a built-in seat belt locking device on the base, a load leg, or a European belt path for secure installation in taxis and rental cars. The head wings and shoulder strap pads are also confining and can make baby sweaty and irritated. "

"The seat fails to yield a secure installation in the majority of cars - with or without the base (Maxi Cosi removed the European belt path on the carrier and doesn't offer a seat belt locking device on the base). It’s limited weight range (5 lbs to 22 lbs) means it isn’t great for preemies or big babies - and the straps get uneven and twist more than we see in other seats. Don't be confused - this seat is not micro... it takes up as much room in the car as seats that fit much bigger babies."

"PROs: Positions seat belt really well. Narrow – great for 3-across. No arm rests – makes buckling easy. Rigid LATCH – may increase side impact protection by preventing lateral shifting of seat - thereby keeping child’s body more within booster’s shell. Good for sleeping - deep head wings + recline. Adjustable back doesn't require add’l support of vehicle seat back up to child's ears like many other high back boosters require. CONs: shallow seat not great for older kids with longer legs."

"While the base installs easily (usually) & securely (always) with LATCH, a seat-belt base installation often fails to yield the secure fit needed as the seat belt locking device isn’t well-aligned with the seat belts in many cars. We like the load leg on the base, which helps reduce risk of head injury, but the base’s wide footprint + sub-optimally positioned seat belt locking device precludes installation in the center seat of many cars. "

"• PROs: Protects like a booster, but doesn't look like a booster. Blends right in with the vehicle seat. Does a great job of keeping lap belt low so crash forces will go on hip bones, not abdomen/lower spinal cord. Great value - prevents serious injuries and costs just $20. Fantastic for kids with long legs and wider kids who don't fit in traditional boosters. Also great for short adults. CONs: Height limit is 60 inches (would be great if manufacturer allowed taller people to use it)."
